Grammar and other things

I'm not that particular about grammar which is good because I never remember all the grammatical rules. I often make up works and have to spell check them. I use the wrong word that sounds similar to the correct one. I often skip punctuation and capitalization when texting.

Still there are things that I read online or in texts that get under my skin.

mouldy
instead of molding. It seems so much dirtier and nasty perhaps because its wetter in England their mold is worse so they need a stronger for it.

cos instead of because. When I read that I hear a teenager who's sentences all sound like questions because they raise the pitch at end.

Misuse of they're, their, and there. Self explanatory. And if its not then I just don't know what to do with you.

Dumb teenager texts like RU in place of are you. I get especially annoyed by the ones that only save 1 letter as in rite instead of right or 2day instead of today.

I'm not a total grouch and am down with LOL and BTW and a few others that make sense in my special world.

I know there are bigger things and more important things to care about and I know its shallow. But I also know many of you, dear readers (all 3 of you), also care and are annoyed. So what annoys you?

mixing up "breath" and "breathe", as well as inappropriate use of apostraphes.

i am guilty of the teenspeak text messages. it is just so hard to drive and text at the same time. (ha, just kidding, no, really...)

Incorrect use of apostrophes. People who use "it's" for all uses, including the places where "its" would be correct (this is part of the apostrophe problem, but is prevalent enough to deserve a category of its own). The word "gift" used as a verb - what's wrong with good words like "present" or "bestow", or even *gasp* "give"? I'm sure I could come up with more, but these are my biggest peeves off the top of my head.

It bugs me when people use English verbage/spelling when they are painfully American. ie: honour, glamour, colour.

Also misused apostrophes, people who don't know how to use quotation marks properly, as well as those who use the texting shorthand you've described.

What makes me annoyed the most is seeing all these blunders and more on Craigslist personal ads. I mean, use spellcheck people! You think I want to "holla" at you if you can't be bothered to type actual words and also to capitalize and punctuate?

Oy.

Yes, teenspeak! That is the perfect term.

My inlaws accused us of naming our son Grey because it was British. We pulled out an American English dictionary to prove to him that it was in fact acceptable in American English.

I was reminded of this one at work the other day:

When people mean 'espresso' but *say* 'expresso'. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!

I am guilty of many of these crimes,I must admit. Not because I lack the knowledge with which to speak and write correctly, but because while texting and blogging and speaking with friends I feel like my responses should not have to be limited by standard MLA format.

And I think we are glossing over perhaps the most offensive misspelling of them all: "a lot" is NOT one word, it is two. always two.
