2 + 1 = ?

Please tell me about going from two to three children.

What was easy that you expected to be hard?

What did you not expect?

What was most shocking?

Three Children: A novella by B Kinch

Having a third child seemed to break down some walls in my mind and make me more flexible and made me desire to see situations from different perspectives. Maia is a little firecracker, and also her mama's precious little baby bird. She has challenged me to rethink some things that I thought I know for absolute sure.

As for what surprised me-
my newfound willingness and eagerness to let friends help me with shopping, laundry, getting to the park. The way that a third baby, especially if you already have a boy and a girl, seems to promote less excitement among extended family. How truly individual each child is, and yet how there are patterns I can follow from parent to child and child to child. Rosie is a lot like her dad, in her facial features and in her way of thinking and making her way. Addison is like me, except stoic and shy like his father. But he thinks along the same paths that I do. Maia mimics her dad's silly expressions and has his eyebrows, but her emotions are so familiar to me, as is her body type, her eyes, her lips. And she moves around and plays the way Addison did at that age. I love the "full catastrophe: of living with three children!

The most shocking thing was the amount of noise they make when they're all together. I get up early just to be able to hear myself think. Also, he's sort of like a team mascot or something. Everyone loves him. I still rarely do things with three that I don't have to, like shopping of any kind. Maybe one day when I get that third arm...

Well, I only have 2, but my best friend from high school, who has 4, passed on this bit of opinion to me:

The second child doesn't quite double the work, but the work required for 3 is about double that of having two.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, huh?

B- I knew you'd have lots of insight.

Dee- Its unfathomable that I could have more noise in my home. Thank God for quiet book reading time. They may not always nap but the half hour to hour of quiet is bliss. Try it sometime! I think it will be a staple in our house for years to come.

Sam- Shut up ;)

i have a different experience. one to two was hard. really, really freaking hard. it was a terrible (and wonderful) adjustment for everyone. 2 to 3 was easy. i am not afraid of welcoming #4 either, it seems as though once i got used to having more than one child at once, any number is simple enough.
